WASHINGTON – The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc., (CBCF) has welcomed Rep. Yvette D. Clarke of New York to its Board of Directors.
Rep. Clarke is serving her second term for District 11. She was elected to Congress in 2006. Before coming to Congress the Brooklyn native, whose roots are firmly planted in her Carribean heritage, succeeded her mother in the New York City Council making them the first mother-daughter succession in the history of the Council.
She is currently the chair of the Emerging Threats Subcommittee on Homeland Security and serves on the subcommittees on Education and Labor, and Small Business.
“Rep. Clarke has exhibited strong leadership skills and has great respect for the work that the Foundation does,” said Rep. Kendrick B. Meek of Florida and CBCF board chairman. “We look forward to her input as CBCF continues to develop leaders, inform policy and educate the public.”
Clarke is also the co-chair of CBCF’s 39th Annual Legislative Conference, scheduled for September 23-26 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington.
“With her rooted interest in the Caribbean community, Rep. Clarke adds to ALC’s global advocacy and appeal,” said Elsie L. Scott, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer for CBCF. “Her seat was formerly held by the late Honorable Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman and Caribbean American elected to Congress. Rep. Clarke is committed to continuing the legacy of national and international excellence,” said Dr. Scott.
Rep. Clarke joins Rep. Bobby L. Rush of Illinois; Duane Farrington, senior vice president at State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co., based in Bloomington, Ill.; Marcus Mason, managing director and partner at The Madison Group in Washington and a former member of the Foundation’s Corporate Advisory Council; and Sharon C. Taylor, senior vice president of human resources at Prudential Financial and chairwoman of The Prudential Foundation, based in Newark, N.J., all whom were named earlier this year to the CBCF board.
The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc., established in 1976, is a non-partisan, non-profit, public policy, research and educational institute intended to broaden and elevate the influence of African Americans in the political, legislative and public policy arenas.
