THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OBESITY AND DIABETES IN AFRICAN-
AMERICAN WOMEN: A CALL FOR ACTION

Obesity has reached near epidemic proportions in the United States. Nearly two-thirds of adults in the United States are overweight, and 30.5 percent are obese, according to data from the 1999-2000 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES. During the years between 2000 and 2001 obesity increased from 19.8 percent of American adults to 20.9 percent of American adults (CDC, Promotion, & Resource, 2002). Based on clinical height and weight measurements from the 1999 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 34 percent of US adults ages 20 to 74 years are overweight, and an additional 27 percent are obese.
