The Congressional Classrooms Project began in 1999 and is offered during the December Congressional recess periods. Through this project, CBCF staff and congressional staffers teach junior high school students in the Washington, DC metropolitan area about the legislative process, the inner workings of Congress, and the history of Blacks in Congress. Volunteers are recruited through a partnership with the Congressional Black Associates (CBA).

The Method
During a 50-minute session, teams consisting of at least two Congressional professionals provide instruction and engage students in discussions pertinent to the objectives of this project. Schools are selected as Congressional Classroom sites in consultation with the Assistant Superintendent of Middle and Junior High Schools. Working with a faculty member identified by each school’s principal, dates and times for visits to the classrooms are identified. Three to four sessions are typically conducted simultaneously at each site.
The Objectives 1. To explain how the federal legislative process works and how public policy affects people, specifically students.

2. To explain the importance and roles of Members of Congress as elected officials.

3. To inform students about the history of Blacks in Congress, with special emphasis on the Congressional Black Caucus.

4. To allow students the opportunity to engage in discussion with African American professionals who represent various Congressional offices.
