CBCF CELEBRATES THE LIFE AND SERVICE OF REPRESENTATIVE JULIA CARSON
Rep. Julia Carson died of cancer at her home in Indianapolis on Dec. 15, 2007. She was 69. Her staff in Indianapolis and Washington will continue her strong legacy of working for her constituents by assisting them with casework and other duties until a successor is sworn in.

CBCF CELEBRATES THE LIFE AND SERVICE OF REP. AUGUSTUS HAWKINS OF CALIFORNIA
Augustus F. Hawkins, the first African American from California elected to Congress and a co-founder of the Congressional Black Caucus, died on Nov. 10, 2007. He was 100. Rep. Hawkins represented South Los Angeles in the state Legislature before rising to Congress.

CBCF REMEMBERS PARREN J. MITCHELL, FIERCE ADVOCATE FOR SMALL BUSINESSES
Rep. Parren J. Mitchell of Maryland, a fierce fighter for the national cause of minority business and one of the 13 founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus, died on May 28 at age 85 after a lengthy illness. Grassroots savvy and scholarly tactical during his 16 years in Congress, he was the five-star general in the fight to establish legislation and equal opportunities for minority business.

CBC FOUNDATION REMEMBERS REP. JUANITA MILLENDER-MCDONALD OF CALIFORNIA
Rep. Juanita Millender-McDonald of California and a CBCF Board member, died of cancer on April 21 in Carson, Calif. Rep. Millender-McDonald was in her sixth full term representing the heavily Democratic 37th District in Southern California, which includes Compton, Long Beach and parts of Los Angeles. Months earlier, the congresswoman had become chairwoman of the influential Committee on House Administration.

CBCF FOUNDATION CELEBRATES LEGACY OF BOARD MEMBER THURMOND WOODARD
CBCF Board member Thurmond Woodard, vice president of global diversity for Dell Inc., died of cancer on April 4, 2007. Mr. Woodard had been a Board member for three years and the driving force behind the AVOICE virtual library, a major resource on the history of African Americans in Congress. Despite his illness, he continually supported the project and lent his office’s resources to ensuring its success.
