CBCF and CBC Spouses Host 15th Annual
Mervyn L. Jones Golf and Tennis Tournament
Scholarship fundraiser draws more than 300 people to Virginia
resort
WASHINGTON, DC - The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation
and the Congressional Black Caucus Spouses hosted the Mervyn L. Jones
Memorial Golf and Tennis Classic on Sunday, June 24, and Monday, June
25, at the Lansdowne Resort in Lansdowne, Va.
Former U.S. President Bill Clinton was the honorary chairman for this
year’s event.
More than 300 people – including many members of the Congressional
Black Caucus, celebrities, corporate executives, African American influencers
and thought leaders – attended.
As many as 220 attendees took part in the golf tournament.
The two-day event, which annually serves as a college scholarship fundraiser,
is named after the late husband to U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs-Jones (D-Ohio).
Since 1988, the CBC Spouses have awarded several million dollars for scholarships
to numerous students seeking degrees in higher education.
“We are delighted to certainly impact our efforts toward increasing
the funds raised for college scholarships,” said Leslie Meek, chairwoman
of the CBC Spouses. “As a result, we will afford the opportunity
for a college education to even more deserving students this year.”
The festivities kicked off on Sunday evening with a VIP reception preceding
a gala dinner and silent auction. The golf, tennis and Bid Whist competitions
took place simultaneously after opening ceremonies on Monday morning.
An awards ceremony and luncheon followed.
Since 1976, the CBC Spouses has been comprised of the wives and husbands
of the African American members of the House of Representatives and the
U.S. Senate.
“The CBC Spouses have worked tirelessly to improve the quality of
life for young people through education and leadership programs,”
said Elsie L. Scott, Ph.D., the foundation’s president and chief
executive officer. “In this capacity, the CBC Spouses have been
instrumental in the success of CBCF’s internship, fellowship and
education scholarship programs.”
