“Making Wellness A Family Affair”

African-American adults are disproportionately affected by the current obesity epidemic with an estimated 77% of women and 61% of men overweight or obese. African-American children are also more likely to be overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. A number of behavioral habits and environmental factors contribute to this disturbing trend.

In response to this growing health concern, the CBCF is encouraging African Americans across the country to take control of their health at individual, family and neighborhood levels through the Black Health Empowerment Project (BHEP).

This community-based obesity education and health promotion initiative provides vital information from leading nutrition, medical and fitness experts in an extremely accessible format, and introduces the entire family to the idea that “fine-tuning” a few habits can lead to significant health gains. By choosing to Make Wellness A Family Affair, participants learn how easy it is to prepare nutritious meals, add physical activity to their daily routine, and access local health resources with the support of loved ones.

BHEP is free to the public thanks to the generous support of AstraZeneca and General Mills. The interactive event features many engaging activities and services including:

  • A 30-minute “Gospel Warm-up”

  • The CBCF Wellness Show (with extensive Q & A)

  • “Nutrition Lowdown” session with cooking demonstration

  • Menu tasting

  • Children's activities

  • Free health screenings

  • Health & Fitness fair exhibitors
