Celebration of Leadership for the Visual and Performing Arts

The annual Celebration of Leadership in the Visual and Performing Arts event, a signature event in the Congressional Black Caucus Spouses’ program portfolio, traditionally helps to kick off CBCF’s Annual Legislative Conference (ALC), a gathering that attracts up to 20,000 people to the Washington each year.

The Celebration of Leadership event recognizes the significant contributions of individuals in the Visual and Performing Arts, as well as corporate leaders, former CBC Spouses, and those citizens who have demonstrated leadership in lifting up and supporting young people and improving the general quality of life for all people.

The proceeds of the Celebration of Leadership event are used to fund scholarship programs in the areas of performing and visual arts. The students who have been selected to win the scholarships are flown in from across the United States to the event, to perform or exhibit their art works and to accept their respective scholarship awards.

Last year, at ALC ’08, the Spouses honored three titans from the performing and visual arts arenas at its Celebration of Leadership event, held at the National Museum of Women in the Arts: “King of the Blues” legend B.B. King; Howard Bingham, Muhammad Ali’s longtime photographer, and Betye Saar, the artist known for her work in the field of assemblage.

At ALC ’07, the Spouses honored Quincy Jones, the legendary entertainer; artist and author Faith Ringgold and artist Eugene Grigsby, Ph.D.
