Congressional Black Caucus Foundation
Center for Policy Analysis and Research

To further the work of CPAR, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation has initiated the CPAR Fellowship Program. This program will allow mid-career professionals an opportunity to connect their work experience with federal policymaking through a yearlong research and policy fellowship. The Gilead Foundation is the program’s inaugural sponsor.

Each year, the CPAR Fellowship Program will award one 12-month fellowship to a mid-career professional specializing in a particular area of interest to CBCF. During the 2009 fellowship year, the CPAR fellow will focus on the disparate impact of HIV/AIDS on African Americans. This unique program will provide the fellow with an invaluable opportunity to help strengthen the connection between providers, researchers and policymakers in order to achieve more viable and pragmatic solutions to the problem of HIV/AIDS in the U.S.

LaShawn McIver, M.D., M.P.H. was selected as the 2009 CPAR fellow. Dr. McIver has extensive experience in public health, teaching, and program development and implementation. She has worked for the Baltimore City Health Department, the Johns Hopkins Hospital and School of Public Health, and Baltimore City Community College, among other organizations. She earned her medical degree from the Medical School for International Health (in collaboration with Columbia University Medical Center) in Beer Sheva, Israel, and her master of public health degree from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
