STATEMENT FROM ELSIE L. SCOTT, PRESIDENT/CEO CBCF

National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day 2012

“The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation is honored to join Act Against AIDS Leadership Initiative on National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.  Today is a reminder to all of us that we must continue to do our part to end the epidemic of HIV/AIDS in our communities.

African Americans are impacted by HIV/AIDS at an alarming rate every year.  Today, half of all people infected with HIV in the United States are black.  One in 16 black men and one in 32 black women will be diagnosed with HIV during their lifetime.  We can reduce these numbers to zero by improving access to health care in our communities and removing the stigma associated with HIV.

There’s no shame in being HIV positive.  Know your status.  Take action to protect yourself and others.”

  • Fighting the Wrong Education Battles
I was pleased to hear that today's event in the Askwith lecture series was sold-out. But I hope that no one here today is under the impression that they are going to hear from Lady Gaga. I'm the warm-up act—she is later this month.
  • Santorum wins in 3 states as Romney stalls
A resurgent Rick Santorum has been declared the winner in three states, raising questions about Mitt Romney's appeal with conservatives at the core of the Republican Party.
