CBCF News is the official newsletter of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. It is published four times a year and is intended to provide an in-depth look at how CBCF is implementing its mission. Also in each edition, various CBC members offer opinions about issues and concerns impacting the country and their districts and detail what steps they as elected representatives are taking to help make a difference.

CBC Members, Debate Watch to Headline ALC ‘08

CBCF is planning what may be the largest organized gathering of people watching a presidential debate as part of the 38th Annual Legislative Conference, Sept. 24-27, 2008, in Washington. U.S. Reps. Corrine Brown of Florida and Gregory W. Meeks of New York are the honorary co-chairs of ALC ’08. They helped to choose as the conference theme “Embracing the Promise, Realizing the Vision,” to recognize the CBC’s role in helping to lead the nation forward. (PDF)

Leadership Development
Meet the CBCF Interns Class of 2008. CBCF continues to help prepare the next generation of leaders with its stellar fellowship and internship programs. These programs encourage and better enable African-American college students and recent college graduates and young professionals to pursue public policy and public service careers. Despite substantial progress in the past 30 years, African Americans are still underrepresented among congressional staff today. (PDF)

A Landmark Celebration

CBCF has marked a significant moment in its history: full and outright ownership of its headquarters, joining a select few African-American nonprofit organizations to own their own building in the District of Columbia. CBCF celebrated the acquisition of its building – a 10,000-square-foot facility that includes administrative offices, a conference room and archival space – at the historic residence of the Turkish Ambassador on Embassy Row on April 29, 2008. Teaching to SHOP for Homes by Stephanie D. Ebron
CBCF’s SHOP for Wealth program conducted workshops at several colleges and universities across the country during the 2007-2008 academic year. Two schools took part for the first time and the program was enhanced with new methods. The support was quite exciting at those institutions where SHOP returned. Overall, SHOP continues to receive many compliments and requests to return with enthusiasm to continue to expand attendance. (PDF)

Enabling Black Boys to Reach Beyond Their Dreams

CBCF and Rep. Danny K. Davis of Illinois on June 19, 2008, released the results of a comprehensive report exploring key factors impacting academic outcomes for African-American males during a forum on Capitol Hill.
