Spirit of Healthy Living
The Spirit of Healthy Living (SoHL) is a diabetes awareness program designed to support church-based health ministries in their efforts to improve congregants’ knowledge of chronic disease, health-promoting behaviors and health care resources. The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation created SoHL to encourage the implementation of diabetes education programs in faith-based settings with predominately African-American memberships. In 2010, Spirit of Healthy Living will be presented in three U.S. cities thanks to funding from Johnson & Johnson and a national partnership with the American Diabetes Association.
Black Health Empowerment Project
The Black Health Empowerment Project (BHEP) is a national obesity awareness and health promotion initiative designed by the CBCF in 2005. The initiative aims to educate African-American families about obesity’s connection to the chronic diseases that disproportionately affect communities of color. Presented in 19 Congressional Black Caucus member districts since its inception, BHEP is an educational community health event that provides attendees with realistic strategies for gradually incorporating healthy eating, physical activity and weight control practices into their lifestyles. Each event features interactive workshops, demonstrations, hands-on activities, exhibitors and an array of free health screenings to encourage adults and youth to “Eat, Move and Test for Health.”
