I cannot ever know what it is to be black. I am considered to be white, but I have experienced the struggle through my children who are considered black. I have seen their pain, have cried for their hurts, but have always instilled in them their worth. After exhaustive research into my own bloodline, I found surprising results. My great great grandmother was a black slave. She was a beautiful black woman. She was sold/traded to a Cherokee Chief. The Cherokee bloodline became dominant. So my father was considered Cherokee. He married my mother who is white. So could I present myself as black?
No. Native American? Yes. But society considers me white. I have had to fight for my heritage.
I am proud of who I am. But I am seen as white. Through my children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, my black heritage has returned. I accept I am white and would never disrespect the African American (black) culture or struggles that have been forced upon anyone. The struggle continues. I consider you family BerThaddaeus M P Bailey. I love you and I am humbled by your presence and your spirit. Fight the good fight. You will overcome.
