WASHINGTON— The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Incorporated (CBCF) will present the Professional Development Series in cooperation with the National Medical Association (NMA) during its 46th Annual Legislative Conference (ALC) at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Sept. 14 – 18. The series will be presented on the opening day of the conference, Wednesday, Sept. 14, from 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., and is open to physicians, health care practitioners, health policy professionals and people interested in promoting health equity.  Reps. Lacy Clay and Karen Bass will serve as honorary co-chairs of the ALC.

“We recognize that the professionals who attend the ALC are looking for opportunities to increase their knowledge base to advance their careers and their work in the community,” said A. Shuanise Washington, president and CEO of the CBCF. “We are excited to  provide enhanced educational offerings at the ALC and look forward to expanding the industries we serve.”

Described as a “conference within a conference,” the Professional Development Series was created in 2015 in response to requests for industry-specific-training and certification during the ALC. More than 300 educators participated in the pilot Professional Development Series for Educators. The educators will return this year for their second year of certification for their industry.

“I am pleased to invite attendees to participate in the Professional Health Series,” said Richard Allen Williams, president of the National Medical Association. “This is a great educational opportunity—not only for healthcare professionals who care about African- American patients—but also for the general public.”

The Professional Development Series comprises eight sessions that offer the highly recognized ACCME signature. Upon completion, NMA members are eligible to receive Continuing Medical Education credits. Sessions include:

•   Zika, HIV/AIDS and the Infectious Diseases

•   Improved Survival but Continued Disparities in Cancer: The 1971 National Cancer Act through          Moonshot 2016

•   Violence and Its Impact on Health Care

•   Strengthening the Diversity Pipeline in Medicine

•   Innovations in Health Care Delivery and the Future of Medicine

•   Sickle Cell Disease: What Every Physician Should Know

•   COPD, Asthma and Respiratory Syndromes

•   Obesity, Metabolic Syndrome, Diabetes and Complications

“We welcome NMA, its members and affiliates as our newest partners in addressing critical health care issues,” concluded Washington. “We look forward to informative sessions led by industry experts about today’s most relevant topics in the healthcare.”

Health professionals can register for the Professional Development Series using code 16PDSNMA at cbcfinc.org/alc. For media registration or if you are a member of the media seeking credentials to events for reporting purposes, please visit http://bit.ly/2bGo3Dr.
