CBCF is seeking an experienced Foundations Grant Writer to facilitate new and existing grants and contract proposals as part of a creative and dynamic team.  This is a full-time position that reports directly to the Senior Development Manager. The individual is responsible for all grant functions required for fundraising, reporting and compliance.  Responsibilities include researching, writing and coordinating the grant application process; managing proposals; and maintaining a donor database. The successful candidate will have a proven track record with measurable success in grant writing; and thorough knowledge of grants administration, and related systems, processes and budget matters.

Reporting to the Senior Development Manager, The Foundations Grant Writer works closely with the Manger to develop strategies to increase and diversify funding as a key member of the Resource Development team.  He/she will collaborate across departments to gather content and data to support grant proposals/reporting, fundraising appeals, and related storytelling success.  The individual will manage and retain all grant proposals and contracts; document grant and contract activities; and provide internal reports as requested.

  5. Internal Relationships: Close coordination with the Senior Development Manager; Programs Department, Center for Policy Analysis and Research Department and Resource Development Team to facilitate grant preparation and administration; and strategic fundraising.
  6. External Relationships: Grant sponsors, donors, and other stakeholders as defined by the CBCF’s strategic priorities and fundraising goals.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Write high-quality grant proposal narratives, applications, and supporting documents.
  2. Research, collect data, and write each grant with strategic focus, compliance and accuracy of timelines.
  3. Conduct the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to foundation and corporate sources. Track progress including benchmarks.
  4. Perform prospect research on foundations and corporations to evaluate prospects for corporate and foundation grants.
  5. Comply with all grant reporting as required by foundation/corporate donors to ensure accuracy and timeliness of grant records and reports.
  6. Work with finance, research and programs teams to gather data and information necessary to report to corporate/foundation funders.
  7. Identify, understand, and facilitate the financial and budget matters of the grant and organization’s goals.
  8. Provide stewardship to donors, including related institutional knowledge.
  9. Facilitate appointments for the President & CEO with foundation officers and other prospects.
  10. Maintain current records in database and in paper files, including grant awards, tracking and reporting.
  11. Document and track awards and statistics relevant to development and provide department with written materials necessary for donor stewardship and success.
  12. Assist with other fundraising projects and duties as requested

  3. Effectively collaborate with staff and consultants in connection with events and projects.
  4. Balance responsibilities with capacity to deliver against organization goals and objectives.
  5. Complete all responsibilities as assigned.

Required Special Skills

  1. Demonstrated history of success in writing grants; including administration.
  2. Strong written and oral communication and editing skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals.
  3. Attention to detail; and ability to meet deadlines.
  4. Knowledge of fundraising information sources.
  5. Experience with proposal writing and institutional donors.
  6. Knowledge of basic fundraising techniques and strategies.
  7. Knowledge and familiarity with research techniques for fundraising prospect research.
  8. Proficiency in online platforms and data tracking systems.
  9. Collaborative and strong contributor in team environments.


The Foundations/Grants Writer must follow and adhere to federal, state and local ethics laws, as well as CBCF policies governing conduct. Failure to comply may result in penalties for CBCF and the incumbent.


  1. Knowledge: Bachelor’s degree in communication or a related field is required with a minimum of three years’ experience in grant research, writing and development. A minimum of one-year experience cultivating and managing donor relations is required.   
  2. Skills and Abilities: The incumbent must demonstrate strategic thinking, with compelling written and oral communication skills. Excellent customer service and acute planning and organization skill is required.  Must be a self-starter with ability to work independent and collaboratively with high productivity in a fast-paced and changing environment.
  3. Computer and Technical Proficiencies: Proficient skills in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and foundation research tools and online grant platforms.
  4. Physical Requirements: The candidate must perform with high productivity in a fast and changing environment. The person in this role must be willing to work some evenings and weekends hours during peak periods. The position is in a small open work environment with stairs.  The position requires operation of traditional office equipment
