FAQ: CBC Spouses Education Scholarship

1. Can international students apply?
You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident.

2. How do I know if I live in the district of a Congressional Black Caucus (CBC)?
Visit here and type in the zip code for your permanent address to determine your U.S. Representative. Afterwards, visit the CBC Membership page to determine if they are a member of the CBC. Note: All residents of New Jersey and California have a senator who is a member of the CBC and may apply.

3. Can I apply for the CBC Spouses Education Scholarship, even if my district is not represented by a member of the Congressional Black Caucus?
You must be a constituent of a CBC member district to be eligible for the CBC Spouses Education Scholarship.

4. Can I apply to multiple scholarships?
Yes! Applicants may apply all available scholarship opportunities—as long as they meet the eligibility requirements for each scholarship opportunity.

5. Are high school seniors eligible for scholarships?
No. Qualified applicants must be currently enrolled full-time in an accredited academic institution seeking an associates, undergraduate, graduate, juris doctor, or doctoral degree. However, qualified African-American and Black junior and senior high school students are encouraged to apply for the CBC Spouses Essay contest.

6. Can I apply for a scholarship if I attend a community college?
Yes, you can apply to the CBC Spouses Education Scholarship, CBC Spouses Performing Arts Scholarship, and CBC Spouses Visual Arts Scholarship if you are pursuing an associate’s degree as a full-time student. Note: Applicants must be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in a health-related field to be eligible for the United Health Foundation Louis Stokes Scholarship.

7. Are there scholarships for students pursuing an undergraduate degree?
Yes. All of our scholarships are open to qualified African American and Black applicants currently enrolled full-time in an accredited academic institution.

8. Are there scholarships for students pursuing a graduate/doctoral degree?
Yes. All of our scholarships are open to qualified African American and Black applicants currently enrolled full-time in an accredited academic institution.

9. When should I submit my application and application materials?
All application materials must be submitted online through the application portal before the deadline in order to be considered. Applicants must upload a copy of their official transcript with their application. Letters of Recommendation are to be uploaded by recommenders through the online application per instructions provided.

10. When will the applications be posted online?
All scholarship opportunity applications will be open on February 3, 2020.

11. What are the deadlines?
The deadlines for each scholarship are posted at www.cbcfinc.org/scholarships.

12. Where do I send my supporting materials?
All application materials must be submitted online through the application portal before the deadline in order to be considered. Applicants must upload a copy of their official transcript with their application. Recommendation letters are to be uploaded by recommenders through the online application per instructions provided.

13. When and how will I be notified?
Decisions will be made by the final week of June. Notifications will be sent via our application portal, AcademicWorks, upon completion of our selection.

14. Who will receive the award check?
Scholarship awards will be sent directly to your academic institution.

15. When are the checks disbursed?
Single disbursement awards are typically sent out to institutions between July and August. For awards that require two disbursements, the first check is sent between August and November and the second check is sent in January once the midterm requirements are completed.

16. What is the financial award of each scholarship?
The award amount varies but the minimum award for the CBC Education Spouses is $1,500.

17. Do the scholarship awards cover one academic year or only one semester?
No. This scholarship opportunity covers just one academic year.

18. Are there any course credit requirements for these scholarships?
You must be enrolled as a full-time student during the semester for which the scholarship award is disbursed. Being enrolled as a part-time student will automatically forfeit your scholarship for that designated semester, and your institution will need to return any funds awarded to CBCF for that semester.

19. How do I renew my scholarship?
This scholarship is not renewable; you must re-submit an application for consideration each year.
