WASHINGTON—A. Shuanise Washington, president and CEO of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. (CBCF), today released the following statement on President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address.

“The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Incorporated shares President Obama’s belief that we are a nation empowered by our diversity and infused with possibility. We echo the President’s words that “we live in a time of extraordinary change— change that’s reshaping the way we live, the way we work, our planet and our place in the world.”

“As we face continued changes and challenges, including income inequality, social justice advancement, and climate change, it is important that our elected leaders put aside differences and move forward together for the betterment of our nation. As President Obama said, ‘the future we want—opportunity and security for our families, a rising standard of living, and a sustainable, peaceful planet for our kids—all that is within our reach. But it will only happen if we work together.’

“We echo President Obama’s call to action and believe that, by working together with legislators and everyday Americans from all walks of life, we can truly make a difference.

“The CBCF is poised to do its part to continue to make America great. We are committed to improving the socioeconomic status of African Americans through research and analysis of the impact of public policy; fostering the exchange of ideas on the social, economic, health and educational disparities plaguing these communities; and developing the next generation of leaders through our Leadership Institute.

“We invite those who share our commitment to join us in 2016 and beyond to help build an America that is great for all of its citizens.”
