WASHINGTON — The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. (CBCF) announced today it will host the 27th Annual Mervyn L. and Stephanie Tubbs Jones Memorial Scholarship Classic at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Golf Resort, Spa and Marina in Cambridge, Md. from June 23-24, 2019. The two-day event, featuring honorary co-chairs Congressman Lacy Clay and Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett, will reiterate the need for and impact of academic scholarships for African American students.
Since 1988, the CBCF has awarded more than $11 million to talented college and graduate-studies students from across the country. CBCF scholarship recipients have advanced to careers in law, medicine, business, public policy, education and the arts, among many other professions. The awards are designed to increase the representation of Black students graduating from college.
“Educational scholarships for African Americans have always played a significant role in our scholastic and economic achievement,” said Dr. Elsie L. Scott, CBCF’s interim president and CEO. “As we face the rising cost of college and higher barriers to entry, the CBCF’s efforts to mitigate these obstacles are becoming increasingly crucial to the success of young Black students everywhere.”
Each year, the Scholarship Classic offers nearly 200 golfers, attendees and CBCF supporters the opportunity to experience how their contributions are molding the lives of emerging professionals across the country. Attendees participate in several empowering activities including networking with scholarship recipients and attending the Rising Stars breakfast, which brings CBCF interns together with Congressional Black Caucus members to discuss how they can impact the future and use their influence for good.
“This annual gathering allows me to put my name and power behind what is truly important to our community,” said Congressman Lacy Clay. “Due to socioeconomic status, the financial burden of college is the root of fear for college students, specifically Black students. The result of scholarships for young people cannot be understated.”
In 2018, the CBCF awarded nearly 300 scholarships to deserving students who demonstrated leadership ability through exemplary community service and academic talent. The financial gifts cover many items associated with higher education including tuition and books.
“[The] Scholarship Classic presents a unique opportunity for us to give back and shape the lives of academically gifted students,” said Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett. “I am honored to serve as [honorary] co-chair of this exceptional event that will bring attention to the real needs of Black students and how we can better assist them with their academic achievement.”

Named in honor of the late Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones of Ohio and her spouse, Mervyn L. Jones, the Mervyn L. and Stephanie Tubbs Jones Memorial Scholarship Classic is an annual fundraiser of the Congressional Black Caucus Spouses Education Scholarship Program. The funds raised support the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc.’s scholarships for deserving college and graduate students across the country.
