Named in honor of the late Representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones of Ohio and her spouse, Mervyn L. Jones, the Scholarship Classic is a powerful golf tournament and networking event, back in-person for the first time since 2019, that provides financial support to more than 300 students across the country who demonstrate exemplary leadership, commitment to community service, and academic talent.
The funds raised go toward the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc.’s scholarships for deserving college and graduate students across the country.
Mervyn L. Jones, Sr. and Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones were married in November 1976. Both were Cleveland natives; Mr. Jones was born on July 7, 1950, and the congresswoman on September 10, 1949. Staunch advocates for social justice, family unity and education, the Joneses were devout public servants who made a positive difference in their community. Representative Jones’ distinguished career is characterized by a number of historic achievements, including becoming the first African American woman to sit on the Common Pleas Court of the State of Ohio. She made history again when she became the first African American woman to represent Ohio in the United States Congress. Mr. Jones preceded his wife in passing on October 2, 2003. Rep. Jones passed on August 20, 2008. They are survived by their son, Mervyn L. Jones, II.
Though they are no longer with us, their spirit lives on. We honor their commitment to education through the Foundation’s scholarship programs.
