WASHINGTON—A. Shuanise Washington, president and chief executive officer of The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Incorporated (CBCF) today released the following statement on the shooting death of 18-year old Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO.

“We share in the sadness and disappointment to learn that Michael Brown, another unarmed black teen, was killed over the weekend. Although there are many questions that still need to be answered about how and why this happened, far too often we have seen similar tragedies, like the shooting death of Trayvon Martin in 2012.

“It’s unfortunate that we will never know what Brown or Martin would have become later in life. According to Brown’s mother, he was set to attend college this week. We know that education is a key component to improving the lives of black youth; it helps to eliminate disparities within the African-American community.

“The loss of any youth is a loss to all of us. We mourn with Brown’s family and send them deep condolences, as we wait for justice that will only come from a transparent and thorough investigation.”
