Statement from Nicole Austin-Hillery, President and CEO of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, on the Passing of Former Congressman William “Bill” Clay Sr.:
“The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation mourns the loss of former Congressman William “Bill” Clay Sr., a pioneering leader, civil rights advocate and founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC).
Congressman Clay was a steadfast champion for justice, labor rights, and equity throughout his more than three decades in Congress. As Missouri’s first Black member of the U.S. House of Representatives, he paved the way for generations of Black lawmakers and inspired countless public servants through his fearless commitment to truth and justice.
His legacy is woven into the very fabric of our democracy. As a founding member of the CBC, Congressman Clay helped establish the foundation for what has become one of the most powerful voices for Black Americans in our nation’s capital. His belief in collective action and legislative advocacy continues to guide the mission and work of the CBCF.
We extend our deepest condolences to the Clay family and all who were touched by his life and leadership. May we honor his memory by continuing the fight for the values he held dear — equity, opportunity, and justice for all.”
