Give Us A 5!CBCF Joins the Global #GivingTuesday Movement

Fundraising campaign supports efforts to increase diversity on Capitol Hill

WASHINGTON— The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Incorporated (CBCF) today announced that it is joining the #GivingTuesday movement to kick off its year-end giving campaign entitled, “#GiveUsA5!” #GivingTuesday culminates on Dec. 1, 2015. The money raised during the year-end fundraiser will support the CBCF’s #Emerge535 program, an initiative to place an intern of color from the CBCF Leadership Institute in all 535 congressional offices on Capitol Hill.

“Our Leadership Institute represents a vital pillar in our mission to develop the next generation of leaders,” stated A. Shuanise Washington, president and chief executive officer of the CBCF. “To date, the community’s support of the Leadership Institute has created opportunities for more than 1200 young leaders in public service careers nationwide. The donations on Giving Tuesday will bolster our efforts.”

Interns and fellows in the Leadership Institute gain first-hand leadership experience by working with and learning from members of Congress. The CBCF has established a pipeline of capable talent, which the foundation hopes will create more representation of African-American leaders in public service careers and public policy positions.

“On #GivingTuesday, we will encourage our online community and supporters to join this movement by making a tax-deductible donation via our crowdfunding website, www.cbcfinc.org/GiveUsA5,” stated Washington.

Today, the CBCF released the first in a series of short videos via social media from interns and fellows describing the benefits of the Leadership Institute and its positive impact on their lives. The videos’ resonating message—“#GiveUsA5!”—will encourage followers to donate $5 or more dollars to support the emerging leaders in the CBCF Leadership Institute programs and help CBCF to reach its goal of increasing diversity throughout the halls of Congress, one intern at a time.
