Recapping the 54th Annual Legislative Conference

Made for This Moment

The 54th Annual Legislative Conference was more than a convening. It was a call to action!

We kicked things off where community voices matter most: in the community in the Congress Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C., with our opening press conference in partnership with Angela Rye’s State of the People. This set the tone for a week grounded in truth, urgency, and collective power. That momentum carried into our National Town Hall, led by veteran journalists Ed Gordon and Joy Reid, where leaders and community members tackled what’s at stake as hard-won policies that expanded opportunity face rollbacks. The conversation didn’t shy away from the moment. It challenged injustice head-on while charting a path forward rooted in unity, civic engagement, and accountability. Across the conference, powerful sessions like Katrina 20 examined the storm’s lasting lessons on health equity, environmental justice, and systemic neglect, while The Power of Black Mayors brought together Mayors Muriel Bowser, Barbara Lee, Brandon Scott, Van Johnson, Andre Dickens, and Brandon Johnson for an unfiltered discussion on governing, protecting progress, and delivering for Black communities at the local level.

The week also made space to celebrate the brilliance and impact that fuel the movement. The Phoenix Awards honored visionary changemakers whose leadership embodies Black excellence in action, while the Sojourner Truth Legacy Reception paid tribute to Black women carrying forward a legacy of courage and justice — with Congresswoman Robin Kelly and Dr. Kimberlé Crenshaw recognized for their transformative leadership and advocacy.

From policy to culture, from reflection to strategy, ALC 54 brought together voices across generations and sectors to affirm a shared truth: progress requires participation, and the work continues long after the conference doors close.
